February 12, 2013 - Simsbury Bank is very pleased to have made a $1,500 Corporate Sponsorship contribution to The Discovery Center. The Center is an award-winning diversity education not-for-profit founded in 1992 by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward Newman and operates programs focused on students in grades 4 through 8, directed at shaping positive attitudes about race and differences, reducing isolationism between urban and suburban/rural schools, and improving math, science and language arts skills. The Bank’s sponsorship will support the Diversity Academy program, which is a curriculum of special courses provided at a variety of locations, including Westminster School, Harriet Beecher Stowe House and the New England Air Museum, for participating urban and suburban schools.
At the sponsorship presentation on January 25, 2013, Martin J. Geitz, President and CEO of Simsbury Bank, said, “We are delighted to be involved in The Discovery Center. Simsbury Bank is committed to enhancing the ability of children from diverse backgrounds to bridge and embrace their differences, and build positive attitudes and learning environments.”
“When The Discovery Center was founded over 20 years ago by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward Newman, it was their desire to bring children together in a setting that would encourage them to appreciate each other’s differences and strive to get along,” said Robert Haggett, CPA, Chair, Discovery Center and Executive VP / COO Newman’s Own Foundation. “It is with their legacy and wishes in mind that we are inspired to empower children with the strength of academic learning and positive attitudes. We are very pleased to receive a corporate sponsorship from Simsbury Bank. We value their support and they will be a solid addition to our team of sponsors as we move onward to mentor and teach children.”
The Discovery Center was founded shortly after Paul Newman’s Hole In The Wall Gang Camp commenced operations in Ashford, Connecticut. In 2002, after experiencing sustained growth, The Discovery Center, headquartered in Farmington, CT, evolved into a separate 501 (c) (3) incorporated in the State of Connecticut. The Discovery Center focuses on building appreciation for Diversity, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Academics.
Three separate programs are provided to students in grades 4-8 including the following: Residential Diversity/Education, Leadership Workshops and Diversity Academy. Partnerships exist between The Discovery Center and 32 schools (representing both urban and suburban) located throughout 10 cities/towns from Connecticut and Massachusetts. Since 2002, over 19,000 children have participated in Discovery Center programs with approximately 3,500 participating in 2012.
