Simsbury Bank is pleased to announce that it has made a gift in support of Westminster School’s Horizons at Westminster program, a summer education program for youth from underserved communities in Hartford. In its second year, elementary school students from Hartford attend a six-week summer program at Westminster School that is paired with Saturday academies throughout the school year.
Martin Geitz, President of Simsbury Bank said, “We are delighted to support such an important program that works to close the opportunity gap. The students enrolled are drawn from Hartford public schools and meet certain criteria. The project-based and long-term focus of the program promotes a life-long love of learning and exploration, which leads to future success for the students. The skills they learn will reward them for the rest of their lives.”
“We appreciate Simsbury Bank’s dedication to enhancing the success of Horizons at Westminster,” said Kathleen Devaney, executive director of the Horizons program. “It is important to keep students academically engaged during the summer, so they don’t lose the progress they made during the school year. Though a blend of academics, enrichment and confidence-building activities including swimming, students have the opportunity to explore and learn in a new environment that increases engagement and promotes social and academic growth.”
Horizon’s at Westminster is part of a national program at independent schools, colleges and universities across the country. The program’s results indicate that it increases school attendance, provides self-esteem, and leads to better grades, a love of learning and a 99% high school graduation rate. The program is in its second year at Westminster and there are 33 students enrolled this summer. Students begin their journey in first grade and will return year after year through 8th grade.
